Thousands to descend on Crewe for unmissable festive season of lights launch.

EXCITEMENT is mounting as thousands of people get set to descend on Crewe to see the curtain raised on a spectacular season of lights in the run up to Christmas.

The eagerly-anticipated ‘Lumen – Crewe’s Nights of Lights’ returns on Friday, November 29 for another unmissable month-long campaign to boost the town’s ‘feel-good factor’ and increase its appeal to visitors.

The Municipal Buildings will once again be brought to life with a dazzling array of projected illuminations, with this year’s display launching at 6.35pm, just minutes after the festive lights switch-on.

Last year’s Lumen event proved to be a smash hit for organisers Crewe Town Council, with the sparkling launch night attracting more than 11,000 people from across Cheshire and beyond.

The 2019 curtain-raiser promises to be even better with visitors being treated to a winter market, funfair, community lantern parade, light installations, fireworks display and a jaw-dropping show by an acrobat hanging from a giant helium balloon floating in the night sky.

Crewe Town Council is working with ArtReach and Double Take Productions, both well known in the art and entertainments industry, to stage the spectacle as part its campaign to promote leisure-led prosperity and put Crewe on the map as the go-to town for events with a difference.

After the launch event, the large-scale Lumen light projection on the Municipal Buildings, which has been made specially for Crewe, will be shown every night to December 27.

Crewe Mayor Benn Minshall said: “Crewe is a great place to live, work and invest and our aim is to promote that. Lumen certainly got people talking about the town in a positive way. The feed-back was fantastic.

“Considering it was such a new and bold addition to our events programme, it couldn’t have been any more successful. Now I’m very much looking forward to Lumen 2019.

“The event is shaping up to be just as big and bright, if not more so, and there will be a few surprises on the night.”

The festivities kick off in Memorial Square at 5pm with giant inflatable lights by Space Cadets and innovative light installations, along with an unforgettable 15-minute performance by unique aerial shows company The Dream Engine.

Its staggering Heliosphere show, which creates the illusion of flying and will see an acrobat spiralling and spinning while suspended beneath a helium balloon above the town centre rooftops, takes place at 5pm, 6pm and 7.45pm.

Other attractions include a community lantern parade from Queensway to Memorial Square, between 6-6.25pm, a funfair and food stalls in Market Square from 5-8pm and a winter market and Santa’s Grotto in Lyceum Square during the same time.

Road closures will be in place from 4-9pm leading up to Memorial Square, Market Square and Lyceum Square.
There will be free parking available from 10am in the following Crewe town centre car parks; Civic Library, Gatefield Holly Bank, Delamere Street and Wrexham Terrace. Free parking will also be available at the Market Centre (near Argos) from 4.30pm onwards.

This year’s attractions follow on from a hugely successful 2018 campaign which saw more than double the number of people drawn to Christmas light switch-on events in previous years.

The increase in footfall led to a bumper £104,995 spent in local outlets, based on a specially-commissioned survey of families attending.

Food was the family treat with lengthy queues seen in cafes, fish and chip shops and coffee houses that stayed open late for the launch night.

While most were from Crewe, others travelled from Stoke, Newcastle, Middlewich, Northwich and Derbyshire after hearing about Lumen on Facebook.
