Local Collaboration Campaigining for Ada Statue for Crewe

Cheshire Womens Collaboration have had a busy summer which includes launching a campaign for an Ada Nield Chew statue within Crewe town.

Kate Blakemore, CEO of Motherwell Cheshire CIO, at the Emmeline Pankhurst statue in Manchester where she finished her statue to statue walk.

Ada Nield Chew (1870-1945) came to the fore when she embarked on a campaign to expose the exploitative conditions under which women worked in a Crewe clothing factory and became a nationally recognised campaigner for women to have greater opportunities through freedom and independence.

To raise awareness of the campaign, Kate Blakemore, CEO of Motherwell Cheshire Charity , and Chair of Cheshire Womens Collaboration successfully completed a 40-mile walk which started at the Anne Lister statue in Halifax and finishing at the Emmeline Pankhurst statue in Manchester.

Kate completed the walk as part of the #mymountain campaign that Motherwell Cheshire have been running this year to encourage the local community to get active.

Speaking of the walk Kate said: “Starting and finishing at statues of inspirational women has helped us to raise awareness of our “Statue for Ada Campaign” where, as a group we are working towards getting a statue designed and erected in Crewe of the activist Ada Nield Chew.

“The actions that Ada took needs to be celebrated.  She achieved so much through highlighting important issues such as the unfairness by which work was allocated in factories and she argued for a living wage for women rather than a “lingering, dying wage.

In addition to raising awareness of the campaign, Kate also raised £750 during the walk for Motherwell Cheshire’s Inspire Project, that supports the mental health and wellbeing of young women aged 13 years plus.  In particular, to create stationery packs to support girls with their studies, creativity and wellbeing.

Kate added: “Since Covid we have seen a rise in referrals for this project; many young women are really suffering with their mental health, many feeling suicidal with no one to turn to.  We are developing the Inspire Project this year so that we can support even more young women in our community.”
