The news that London Marathon 2020 will only be for elite athletes, with all other participants completing the 26.2 miles virtually, has been hard hitting for many national charities. However, local charity YMCA Crewe has seen it as an opportunity.
A London Marathon charity participant can raise thousands of pounds for their chosen charity, but the minimum sponsorship required, and the extra costs for travel and accommodation can leave the iconic event out of reach for many people without the income, resources and connections to guarantee raising the required money. It can also be a huge challenge for small charities to secure spots for their fundraisers, with many places historically allocated to the large, national charities.
YMCA Crewe want to level the playing field. On Sunday 4th October, the same day as London Marathon, they will host their own financially accessible, virtual marathon. No participation fees, no minimum sponsorship, just an opportunity to complete the ultimate bucket list challenge, and get your very own marathon t-shirt and medal.
Participants will have 24 hours to walk or run 26.2 miles, either individually or as part of a relay team. The miles completed will need to be logged either using an app, or good old pen and paper, and everyone completing the 26.2 miles will receive a medal and t-shirt. YMCA Crewe will provide a fundraising pack for anyone wishing to raise money to support their vital work with young people who have experienced homelessness, and they hope to host a celebration event for all participants following the event, as long as it is safe to do so.
